Incensed fans of Asante Kotoko took matters into their own hands by causing chaos in their stand at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in response to a controversial referee decision during their 2-2 draw against Nations FC.
The turmoil erupted after referee Abdul Latif Qadir awarded a penalty to the home team in stoppage time while Asante Kotoko was in the lead with a score of 2-1. The Kotoko supporters expressed their displeasure by hurling bottles onto the pitch, temporarily halting the game. It took the intervention of Kotoko manager Prosper Ogum Narteh and several team officials to quell the fans and restore order, allowing the penalty to be executed at their end of the field.
A video shared by Mx24 Sports Anchor Ayim Derrick shows not only the pitch being littered with bottles but also the away stand seats being uprooted in the chaos.
Despite the incidents of vandalism, the match remained an exciting contest and ultimately ended in a draw.
Nations FC drew first blood when, six minutes after halftime, Andrews Ntim Manu inadvertently scored an own goal from Amadou Dirra’s header. With the home team looking poised for a narrow win, Asante Kotoko pulled off a remarkable comeback with two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Substitute Steven Mukwuala scored in the 81st minute from a deflected shot, and a minute later, Kyei Dwamena put the visitors ahead with a brilliant finish from inside the box. However, Asante Kotoko couldn’t maintain their lead as Nana Bayin handled the ball in a chaotic defending sequence, leading to a stoppage-time penalty that Amadou Diarra successfully converted.
Following the draw, Nations FC extended their unbeaten home streak to three games. The result saw Asante Kotoko slide down to 7th place on the table with 9 points, while Nations FC rose to 14th place with 5 points.
