The President of Villarreal Supporters Group, Cesar Peña, has publicly opposed the club’s potential signing of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, citing his ongoing legal issues. The former Arsenal star faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, charges steeming from alleged incidents in 2021 and 2022 during his time at Arsenal. Peña argued that signing a player accused of such serious crimes conflicts with the club’s values and reputation.
In an interview with The Athletic, Peña acknowledged Partey’s talent, noting his standout performances, such as in the 2025 game against Real Madrid in the Champions League. However, he emphasized that he and many fans oppose the transfer, stating, “My personal opinion aligns with most fans on social media: I would not agree to sign a player accused of such serious crimes, and I would understand if fans booed him on the pitch.” He urged Villarreal’s management to consider the fans’ concerns, warning that the signing could alienate supporters, regardless of the tribal’s outcome.
Peña stressed that the issue extends beyond strengthening the squad, as the club’s decision could damage its community standing. Despite Partey’s conditional bail following his court appearance on August 5, 2025, and reports that his move to the Spanish club is nearing completion, the supporters’ opposition remains strong.
