Two individuals have been apprehended for attempting double registration during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) in Wa, Ghana. The registration machines detected their attempt while they were in the process of registering.
Ben Alaglo, the Wa Municipal Electoral Officer, confirmed this development to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He explained that although they initially considered handing the individuals over to the police, they were instead cautioned and allowed to leave. The individuals claimed they thought they had registered in 2016, which led them to attempt registering again.
Alaglo also emphasized the importance of not attempting double registration and warned that the machines would detect such attempts, leading to legal consequences.
During the visit by the GNA to the registration center, it was observed that over 40 people had registered and received their ID cards. However, the turnout was not very high, and there were no long queues at the center.
The limited voter registration exercise is being conducted by the EC to allow eligible voters who have not obtained their voter’s ID cards to do so before the District Level Election (DLE) later in the year. The exercise, which lasts for 21 days, is expected to register at least 1,350,000 people, according to the EC’s projections.
