The Ministry of Education is taking steps to introduce laptops as a replacement for textbooks in Senior High Schools nationwide, as announced by the government. The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, revealed that the laptops would be equipped with teaching and learning materials, effectively replacing traditional textbooks. Dr. Bawumia made this announcement during the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School, emphasizing that the implementation of this initiative is scheduled to take place before the end of 2023.
The primary objective behind this move is to prepare students to adapt to the globalized world. Dr. Bawumia stressed the significance of investing in education as a pivotal platform for cultivating future leaders and propelling the country forward in the right direction. He further stated that the Minister for Education had assured him of commencing the replacement of textbooks with laptops containing embedded educational content in Senior High Schools this year.
This recent initiative builds upon the government’s earlier launch of the One-teacher One-laptop project on September 3, 2021. The project aimed to provide modern teaching materials to Senior High School teachers, facilitating more effective teaching and learning methods. According to the Ghana Education Service, as of December 11, 2021, 80% of the laptops intended for teachers had already been distributed.
