Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, the esteemed mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has commended Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, Legon, often referred to as PRESEC-Legon, for their outstanding dedication to the quiz program.
In an exclusive interview with Star FM on Thursday, November 2, 2023, Prof. Kaufmann lauded the exceptional preparedness of PRESEC’s contestants, attributing their success to the well-structured academic environment provided by their school. She noted that PRESEC students are frequently engaged in quiz activities, giving them a distinct advantage over their peers in other institutions who may focus more on entertainment and extracurricular pursuits.
“It appears that their contestants are well-prepared even before joining the school. Young students in junior high or basic schools watch this program, observe the excellence of PRESEC, and aspire to attend that institution. These days, various quiz programs and practices are in place, and by the time students join PRESEC’s quiz team, they already have a head start. This stands in stark contrast to girls’ schools that select their contestants after mock exams in their final year. Are they competing on an equal footing?” Prof. Kaufmann questioned.
She further emphasized the structural advantages enjoyed by PRESEC, explaining that the school has a long-standing tradition of engaging in quiz programs, while other institutions may prioritize different activities. “At PRESEC right now, I’m sure they have different teams, and they didn’t start this just yesterday. While other schools are singing and dancing, these students are dedicated to quiz programs within their school,” Prof. Kaufmann highlighted.

In a remarkable feat of academic excellence, PRESEC-Legon emerged as the victor of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz competition. The prestigious competition, held on Monday, October 30, 2023, witnessed PRESEC securing their eighth title in the history of the event, a record achievement.
Following five rounds of intense intellectual competition, PRESEC accumulated a total of 40 points, overshadowing their closest competitors. Achimota Secondary School attained 28 points, while Opoku Ware Senior High School trailed behind with 23 points.
PRESEC’s latest victory in 2023 adds to their previous titles in 1995, 2003, and 2005, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in the National Science and Maths Quiz competition.
