This week, The Post reported that traders at Abrepo Junction in Kumasi have asked the President to investigate the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly over the introduction of “Double Track” tax system.
According to the traders, they were being made to pay the tax twice a day with some claiming the signature they sign on the evening tickets isn’t done well as compared to the one they do in the morning.
The Post has gathered that the traders may have not been well informed of the tax system very well.
According to the KMA by-laws, when a trader pays the tax in the morning or afternoon, it expires at 6 pm that day. And after 6 pm, any trader seen doing business must pay tax which will enable the trader to do business till 6 am the following day.
This by-law was made in 2013 but has not been really active until now.
The reason why the KMA is enforcing this bye-law is that some traders especially food vendors start their business after 6 pm and such people most of the time do not pay tax. Moreover, it is those traders who according to the city authorities make the city dirty and also make use of the street lights. Therefore, in other to make sure they widen the tax net and increase its revenue that is why they are now fully enforcing a by-law it made in 2013.
But some traders are of the view that they should be allowed to do business for the day as they are even struggling to keep their business running due to the current hardships in the country.
