Over the weekend, news broke out that the minority in Parliament have decided not to involve themselves in registering for the National Identification cards (Ghana Card).
Earlier on, there were reports that the main reason why the minority does not want to involve themselves in it is because of the amount involved.
There were reports that the government will be spending over a billion dollars to do the registration which was later debunked by the National Identification Authority (NIA).
Last week, the NIA cleared the air and indicated that contrary to the earlier reports that they will be spending over a billion dollars, they will rather spend less than $ 300, 000, 000 to do the registration.
Again, the minority, according to them, were told by the NIA that they will come to parliament and brief them on the program. Instead, the NIA chose not to go to Parliament and went ahead to start the program.
Not only that, the minority are also saying, they have a problem with the Identification cards the NIA wants Ghanaians to use to do the registration.
The NIA wants Ghanaians to use either birth certificate or a passport to do the registration. The minority, however, are arguing that they should accept Voter ID cards too. The passport especially, they believe, is not as common as the Voter’s ID card. Therefore, preventing people from using it will also, in turn, prevent people from registering.
The minority have decided to boycott registering for the Ghana Card because the NIA did not allow them to voice out their concern.
