The Ghanaian police have arrested Joyce Amoabeng, a 33-year-old woman, for allegedly attempting to murder her biological mother for money rituals in Assin Fosu. According to the victim, Theresa Amoah, 59, the suspect attacked her at around 10:30 hours, sneaking into her room wearing a face mask and jalabiya. The suspect then allegedly covered her mouth and nose with a cloth in an attempt to suffocate her to death. The victim managed to struggle with the suspect and shouted for help. A woman and a teenage boy who heard the noise rushed to the room and caught the suspect strangling the victim, eventually saving her life.
The suspect attempted to flee but her jalabiya got removed in the process, revealing her identity as Marfowaa, the daughter of the victim who had earlier told the family she was traveling to Accra. After searching her small bag, residents found a medical bandage, syringe, and nyanya leaves, which were allegedly intended to be used for the ritual on the victim. Confirming the incident, the Assin Fosu Police stated that they are investigating the matter.
In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Central Regional correspondent, the victim, Theresa Amoah, shared her experience, “I gathered strength to struggle with her and shouted for residents’ help. The boy came to my rescue, held her and the woman caught her from behind and saved my life. I want the law to deal with her mercilessly, no mother will do this to her child for money rituals. The police should do their work and investigate this case.”
