While family, friends and sympathizers were waiting for the funeral of the late Ama Freda to start at Suame in Kumasi, they were surprised when two police officers and some members of the deceased’s family from her mother’s side came with an injunction to prevent the body from being buried.
In Asante customs and traditions, children form part of their mother’s family. Therefore, should anything happen, whether good or bad, her mother’s family must be involved in it.
Maame Adwoa Donkor, 62, placed the injunction on the late Ama Freda, 28, burial.
Maame Adwo Donkor’s younger sibling Philomena Fordjour was married to Agya Osei Kwadwo till her demise.
Since then, Agya Kwadwo has not made the family aware of anything involving the children.
According to the family, when Ama got married, it was an outsider who informed them.
Since then, they did not hear anything about her until someone told them she had died.
With no message from Agya Kwadwo about the death of Ama, they went to his house to find out if it was true.
Upon seeing his late wife’s family, Agya Kwadwo left and it was his sister who greeted them and also informed them of the funeral arrangements.
Agya Kwadwo, instead of doing what tradition requires by going to inform his late wife’s family about the demise of his daughter chose to organize the funeral rite without giving them any details.
Maame Adwoa Donkor, the elder sister of the late Philomena Fordjour, went to court to have an injunction placed on the burial of her late sister’s daughter.
The body of the late Ama Freda, who died a month after giving birth was taken back to the morgue after the police and the other family members went to the funeral ground with the injunction.
