During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Ghanaian national football team, the Black Stars, incurred a total cost of $80,000 due to yellow card accumulations. Despite playing three matches in the tournament, they were unable to progress beyond the group stage.
Throughout their campaign, the team received a total of eight yellow cards, resulting in the hefty financial penalty. Ghana managed to secure one victory against South Korea but suffered defeats against Portugal and Uruguay.
The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, disclosed in a recent interview that the country had to pay $10,000 for each caution received during the World Cup.
Players such as Alidu Seidu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Daniel Amartey, Tariq Lamptey, Inaki Williams, Andre Ayew, and Mohammed Kudus were among those who received yellow cards during the tournament held in Qatar.
