There are reports of an exchange of gunfire between personnel of the Ghana Police Service and civilians in the capital town of the Northern Region, Tamale.
As per a news report by Metro TV, the incident unfolded at a district court in Tamale on Monday, August 28, 2023.
The report indicates that the situation arose when community members gathered at the court to ensure proper prosecution of a drug peddler who has been negatively impacting the youth of Tamale.
The community members have accused the police of shielding the drug peddler, alleging that he is released without proper trial each time he is apprehended.
A confrontation between the police and the youths, who have taken on the responsibility of combating drug peddling in Tamale, escalated into an exchange of gunfire. According to the report, this led to injuries sustained by three police officers and several civilians.
A video shared by Metro TV captured the chaotic scene, with people fleeing as gunshots rang out.
