The game between Argentina and Nigeria is unquestionably a must watch game for every football fan. Not because of Messi but because of what might transpire in the game.
Nigeria’s win against Iceland has given Argentina hope. Now both teams have their destiny in their own hands.
Though a win can see either of the teams through to the next round, Iceland must not beat Croatia for that to happen.
Both teams have met 5 times with Nigeria winning the last one by 4 goals to 2 in an international friendly.
In the last two previous World Cups, Argentina beat Nigeria by a goal to zero in South Africa 2010 and 3-2 in Brazil 2014.
In between 2010 and 2014, they met twice with Argentina beating Nigeria 3-1 and Nigeria also beating Argentina 4-1 in the games they played.
In 1995, both teams drew a goalless draw in Saudi Arabia at the FIFA Confederations Cup.
But Tuesday’s game is not like the games they have already played.
The 2014 finalist, Argentina need to qualify for Messi to stand a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or while Nigeria also wants to make it out of the group stage.
Sampaoli’s tactics have not been working for him like it did for Chile in 2010 and 2014 during the World Cup and also in 2015 and 2016 when they beat Argentina to lift the Copa America trophy.
There are reports Sampaoli will face the exit should Argentina fail to qualify from the group stage.
Argentina struggled throughout the qualifiers. Lionel Messi had to pull his wand to score a hat-trick when they played at Equador. But the question we are all asking is, can he do it again at the World Cup?
It is now down to both teams to give their all if they want to qualify but whoever wins must pray for Croatia to beat Iceland.
