Former Hearts of Oak defender Raddy Ovouka has candidly shared the financial struggles he faced when he initially joined the Ghanaian club, revealing that he received a modest monthly salary of GH₵ 800.
The Congolese left-back, who arrived in Ghana without a place to stay or basic necessities, found himself in a challenging situation where the club, having not seen him play before, insisted on this low wage. Despite the difficult circumstances, Ovouka had to make the tough decision to either accept the offer or leave.
“I signed a five-year deal with Hearts of Oak from 2018 to 2023. When I was about to sign the contract, they told me they had never seen me play before, so if I didn’t like the salary, I could leave. It wasn’t easy for me because I didn’t know anyone in Ghana, and I needed to get a place to sleep, so I had to sign the contract like that,” Ovouka shared in an interview with ghanasportspage.com.
In 2021, Ovouka’s fortunes took a positive turn when he secured representation through an agent. Subsequently, the defender successfully renegotiated his salary, experiencing a substantial increase to GH₵ 4,000.
Ovouka played a crucial role for Hearts of Oak, contributing to their success in winning the Ghana Premier League title in the 2020/21 season as well as clinching FA Cup titles.
