A young woman’s assertion of her rights led to her arrest by officers of the Ghana Police Service in Accra. The officers requested that the woman, who was in a ride-hailing vehicle, hand over her bag for a search, but she refused.
A video of the altercation, shared on social media, showed the woman insisting that the police had no right to search her bag. She questioned why they wanted to search her bag and whether she fit a specific description. The police officer mentioned that they wanted to search her bag because she appeared suspicious.
One of the officers allowed her to record the situation, but the woman continued to resist the search. This led to her arrest, and the officers took her to the Grede Estate Police Station in Teshie, a suburb of Accra.
Under Ghanaian law, police officers cannot search a person’s belongings without a warrant or court order. However, if they have a valid warrant or reasonable suspicion of criminal activity, individuals are expected to cooperate with the search. This incident highlights the importance of knowing one’s rights when dealing with law enforcement.
