Former President, John Dramani Mahama who is currently in Zimbabwe as an observer to the country’s upcoming elections has also shown his disappointment with the government of Ghana for sacking and appointing new officials to the Electoral Commission.
Mahama, in a post on his social media page, posted a picture of himself with former EC boss, Afari Gyan, and showered a praise on him.
Also, he indicated the recent happenings at the EC might affect the country’s ‘democratic credentials’.
He posted, “In Harare as Head of the Commonwealth Observer Group to Zimbabwe’s July 30 election. Proud to serve on the same mission with the highly respected former EC Chair, Kwadwo Afari Gyan, who for almost 2 decades established Ghana’s reputation for credible election mgt.”
Adding, he stated, “Current controversy surrounding the removal of EC Chair and deputies and subsequent appointment of new commissioner is regrettable and has a potential to erode Ghana’s democratic credentials.”
The former President has joined his fellow party members, the NDC, who are still protesting the sacking and the appointment of Jean Mensa and three other people to the top hierarchy of the Electoral Commission.
Mahama appointed Charlotte Osei after her predecessor went on retirement after the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
But after conducting her first and only election, Charlotte Osei was shown the exit by President Akufo-Addo after he was petitioned by some staff of EC.
The NDC after her sacking wanted to go on a demonstration but the death of former Vice President Amissah-Arthur stopped them.
The dismal of Charlotte Osei has caused an uproar in the opposition NDC as they believe she was not treated fairly and Mahama’s post seem to have confirm he is in support with his party members.
